Carbon Harvest, how Indigo determines credits generated
by Indigo Agriculture
Learn about an important stage of the carbon program, Carbon Harvest. Carbon Harvest includes entering records and filing fields, this is necessary to ensure growers get paid for their carbon farming practices.
After creating an account, determining eligibility, mapping fields, enrolling fields, and implementing an indicated practice change in the eligibility window there is one final stage left in the carbon program, Carbon Harvest. Carbon Harvest happens each year the grower is enrolled and continues implementing practice changes.
Four Steps of Carbon Harvest:
- Enter farm records
- Submit the field for feedback
- Make edits on the field, if applicable
- File field
During the first stage, Indigo requests farm records to be entered in order to calculate carbon credits generated on the field. If this stage is not completed, payment will not be provided even if a farmer implemented a practice change. We require detailed records in order to remain the highest-quality Carbon program on the market which leads to building buyer demand.
The records are then reviewed by Indigo to ensure they follow USDA Crop Data and other standard practices known to the grower’s region. To ensure the effort to enter records isn’t too burdensome, we use remote sensing, and offer integrations with other farm management systems.
After the fields are filed, all the records are sent through our modeling method, a 6-step process, to determine the credits generated on the fields. Indigo then creates a report to be sent to the verifier, to check the method and information provided to verify the credits. Think of these teams as building inspectors. In order for buyers to feel confident in purchasing a building, they need to know the internal structure not only is of high-quality construction but meets building codes. Without this important step, buyers will not know if they can trust the building, leading to a significantly reduced price. Similar to carbon credits, buyers only want to buy verified credits to avoid any greenwashing claims and ensure their purchase is making an offset.
That’s it for Carbon Harvest. The next step is to wait for payment. Congrats!
